Egg Harbor Township Man Accused of Committing Brutal Murder in Pleasantville, NJ
An Egg Harbor Township resident was recently indicted on first degree murder charges stemming from the brutal beating death of a man in Pleasantville, NJ.
The homicide occurred on December 23, 2015. According to law enforcement, the suspect went to the victim’s Pleasantville residence and brutally attacked him. The suspect also allegedly attacked a woman who was inside the house, which is located on Greenfield Avenue in Pleasantville, New Jersey.
The male victim was a 30-year-old man who suffered significant physical trauma and tragically died the following week at a local hospital. Medical examiners later conducted an autopsy and determined that the victim died due to blunt force trauma to his head. The female victim is a 22-year-old woman who sustained significant injuries in the attack but survived thanks to the heroic efforts of emergency medical responders and physicians.
Law enforcement investigated the killing, but it took them almost a month to locate the suspect. Police officers eventually arrested the suspect on January 22, 2016 at a residence in Secaucus, NJ.
The suspect is a 27-year-old man who resides in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. He was charged with numerous crimes, including first degree murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Now the suspect has been indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury on the first degree murder charges, setting the stage for the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office to take the case to trial and seek maximum penalties in the case.
Atlantic County prosecutors have not yet indicated what might have caused the suspect to attack the homeless man in the first place. Presumably, prosecutors will have to establish a motive for the violent assault when seeking a conviction against the suspect.
If the suspect ultimately goes to trial in Atlantic County Superior Court and is convicted on the murder charges, he would face severe penalties. That’s because murder is the most serious criminal offense listed in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction for first degree murder could lead to life imprisonment in NJ State Prison, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
While the suspect awaits resolution of the case, he is being held at the Atlantic County Jail on a massive $1 million bail amount, with no 10-percent cash option available for posting bail.
